Dear friend:
This month (and for those of us in the U.S., this Sunday,) millions of people around the world will be honoring and acknowledging mothers in celebration of Mother’s Day.
When we think of the mother archetype, it usually conjures up images of a mother nurturing a child. I would like to plant the seed and suggest that in a larger context, this is a great opportunity to “pause” and ask “how are you mothering or nurturing yourself?”
What do you need this month to feel supported, nurtured, whole and alive? Thinking about total self care—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual—what area is calling to you? Where is your greatest need?
Maybe it’s time to take a step back and take a personal retreat to gain clarity and focus for the second half of the year? Maybe your body is sending you signs that you need to incorporate more movement, eat more energy-rich foods, or radically change your sleep habits. If you’re feeling isolated or disconnected, maybe you need to reach out to a therapist, coach, mentor or find new friends that can really support you at your current life stage? If you’re feeling overscheduled and constantly rushed, maybe you need to say “no” to some of your commitments or create a new work or child care schedule? Perhaps you’re feeling stuck in your relationship and need support in reconnecting with your partner? Or, maybe you need to build “downtime” into your month when you and your family have nothing going on and can just relax? (In our family, we actually try to schedule “unscheduled time” on our calendar each month.)
I challenge you to tune in this month to your needs. “Self care is not about self indulgence. It is about self preservation.” Audre Lorde
